A little about me...

Welcome, It can be a big decision and take great courage to come to counselling and I hope that this page will give you some information about what counselling is, the types of issues it can help with and some details about myself.

People come to counselling for lots of different reasons, for example; to clarify what is important to them in their lives, to get in touch with their inner resources, to live their lives in a more fulfilling and insightful way, to explore feelings, to receive support at a time of crisis and during transitional and development periods in life, to work through “stuckness”, to explore and unlearn learned behaviours and to change to a more meaningful and fulfilling existence.

There are times in our lives where we can feel that it would be helpful to talk to someone about whatever issues that are going on for us. These issues can be very broad and can include things like:

• Depression
• Anxiety
• Loss/Bereavement
• Relationship Issues
• Family issues
• Sexual abuse
• Eating Disorders
• Work changes and transitions
• Anger management

Counselling offers a space to discuss these issues in a non-judgemental, empathic and genuine way and will help you look at and understand your feelings, your responses and your behaviours supportively and openly. By creating a relationship that is warm and accepting the counsellor works with you to help you express and explore how you feel.

Who am I?
Initially I trained as a psychologist and I then went on to study a particular type of therapy/counselling which is the client-centred and integrative approach. I work from the humanistic and integrative perspective and so I believe that you are the expert on your life. Therefore for me counselling is not about giving advice or prescribing solutions. Rather I believe that every person can find their own way forward when they are involved in and a part of a safe therapeutic relationship.

Since my initial training I have gone on to do specialised training in trauma, bereavement and couple work. In my private practice I work with individuals and couples on issues such as:

• Trauma
• Loss and Grief
• Depression
• Relationship Issues
• Anxiety
• Sexual abuse
• Eating Disorders
• Work changes and transitions

Outside of my private practice I teach on a professional course in counselling and psychotherapy and work with two organisations. In one of these organisations I work as a group facilitator on a 26 week programme specifically with and for people who have attempted suicide or are dealing with suicidal thoughts.
